Description

Alexander Cockburn McBarnet was born on 1 Jan 1826, the son of Alexander McBarnet of Attadale and Torridon, Ivernesshire. Commissioned into the 79th Foot Cameron Highlanders from the 16th Foot on 20 Oct 1846, McBarnet was promoted to the rank of Captain on 10 Mar 1854 and Major on 20 July 1858. He had served with the 79th Highlanders at the Battles of Alma and Balaclava, the seige and fall of Sebastopol and the expedition to Kertch and Yenikale. He then served during the Indian Campaign of 1858-59 at the seige and capture of Lucknow, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel on 25 Apr 1965 and going on to hold the office of Deputy Lieutenant.
