Description

Samuel Pooley was born in Bermondsey, Surrey in 1881 and enlisted at the age of 14 years, 10 months with the 1st Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers on 28 Sep 1896, his trade listed as 'Musician'. Sailing on the SS Ligmore Castle transport ship, Pooley arrived at Maritzburg on 27 Dec 1897 and Ladysmith on 19 Sep 1899, transferring to the 2nd Battalion with his rank listed as 'Boy' and then 'Bandsman'. He died of enteric fever at Heidelberg on 18 July 1900, aged just 19, with his next of kin address at Witham School.
