Description

D.F.M. Gazetted on 3 June 1919: No.43 Balloon Observer "This airman has done consistently good work as an Observer since last May. He has shown marked keenness and determination and has carried on his work under shell fire and in high winds. On 1 Aug 1918 he was working at a height of 5,600 fettnear LAHOUSSOYE when he was attacked by a hostile aircraft and forced to parachute." Belgian Decoration Militaire Gazetted 8 Feb 1919. Charles Robert Cooper Shorland was born on 30 Sep 1891 in Ealing, Middlesex and worked as a rate collector, living at Whitecliffe, Rancorn Road, Margate, before enlisting with the Royal Flying Corps on 3 July 1915. Serving with 1 Balloon Section from Oct 1915, Shorland transferred to 10 Balloon Section before 43 Balloon Section, during which time he was promoted to the rank of 1st Airman on 1 Oct 1917 and awarded 2 gallantry awards for the period May to Nov 1918. Appointed Acting Corporal Clerk on 12 Sep 1918, Shorland was discharged on 30 Apr 1918. Just 105 D.F.Ms were awarded during WWI and 20 Belgian Decoration Militaires to R.F.C./R.N.A.S./R.A.F. personnel.
