Description

Doris Field Arrowsmith was born on 20 Mar 1889 and lived on 42 Britannia Strett. Petone, Wellington, New Zealand before joing the New Zealand Army Nursing Service at the nearby Trentham Camp. She then served aboard the New Zealand Hospital Ship SS "Marama" from 4 Dec 1915, all the way util 2 Oct 1916, taking leave on 8 Apr 1918 to marry New Zealand Maori Pioneers officer, Lieut. Bertram Gibbons. Bertram Gibbons was born 4 June 1884 and worked at the Public Works Dept., Auckland as a Draughtsman and lived at Byon Avenue, Takapuna, Auckland. Gibbons served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade in Western Europe in 1915 and 1916 as a Company Sergeant Major before being commissioned into the 4th Battalion N.Z.R.B. on 7 Apr 1917.  Gibbons was then posted to the New Zealand Maori Pioneers, 3rd Raratongan Contingent in Egypt in from 28 Feb 1918 before marrying Doris Field Arrowsmith.
