WWII M.B.E/M.C. GROUP OF MEDALS TO MAJOR NOEL W. CHAVASSE, MIDDX. REGIMENT WITH NOEL GODFREY CHAVASSE, V.C. & BAR, M.C. AND CHRISTOPHER MAUD CHAVASSE'S CHILDHOOD SCRAPBOOK

** NEW ** M.B.E. Military Division; Military Cross with reverse dated 1943; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star with 8th Army clasp; Italy Star, France & Germany Star, War Medal, US Air Force Medal (engraved Noel Willinic Chavasse). Accompanied by the poignant childhood scrapbook entitled “Snow Flakes”, created in the winter of 1900-01 when the twins were at Magdalen College School, Oxford, with content penned from the medal recipient's father, Bishop Christopher Maud Chavasse and illustrated with sketches and watercolours by his uncle, Noel Godfrey Chavasse, who would go on to win the Victoria Cross and Bar before dying of wounds during WWI. Christopher Maud Chavasse named his eldest son, Noel, in memory of his famous twin.

Description

Military Cross Gazetted 19 Aug 1943: "During the Battles of Mareth and the Gabes Gap this Officer displayed great courage and devotion to duty. He carried out his duties of L.O. all over the Battle area, at times under heavy fire and in heavily mined areas. He never faltered and his services were outstanding, he was an inspiration to others and contributed in no small way to the success of the Highland Division.” U.S. Air Medal Gazetted: "For meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights in Italy from 1 Oct to 31 Dec 1943. As a General Staff Officer, Headquarters, Eighth Army, Captain Chavasse flew across the high mountains of Italy in order to bring to the Commanding General, Eight Army, a prompt and accurate report of the progress and tactical position of the American Fifth Army operating to the left of the British. In spite of weather obstacles and conditions of combat, not once did Captain Chavasse fail to return on schedule with vital information that was of material aid in welding the two great Armies into a potent Allied Force." M.B.E. (Military Division) Gazetted 13 June 1946.

Major Noel Willinc Chavasse M.B.E., M.C. was commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment in 1939 and later served with the 8th Army. His father (O.B.E., M.C., T.D.) was the Bishop of Rochester and a great friend of Field Marshal Montgomery, who’s Staff Chavasse joined as Monty's personal ADC Staff Officer and would serve on during the Normandy campaign and the early post war years.
