Description

Sir George Manning, C.M.G. was born in Gowerton, Wales on 11 Feb 1887, the son of Richard Manning and Sarah Davies. Emigrating to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1910, Manning was a central trade union figure and became Secretary of the Canterbury Workers' Educational Association and elected onto the Christchurch City Council from 1927 to 1929.

Serving as a councillor for 32 continuous years, Manning was appointed Deputy Mayor from 1950 to 1958 and Mayor in 1958. Manning was appointed Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in the Queen's Birthday Honours and awarded an honourary doctorate from the University of Canterbury in 1972.

Manning died in Christchurch on 29 Dec 1976.
