Description

Albert Newby Clay was born in Little Laver, Essex in 1836 and was commissioned Lieutenant with the Hampshire Regiment of Militia Artillery on 21 Nov 1854, then Ensign with the 79th Foot from Gentleman on 7 Sep 1855, present at the Siege and Capture of Lucknow in Mar 1858 during the Indian Mutiny.

Clay was made Lieutenant by purchase on 1 July 1859, Captain by purchase on 15 June 1866, Instructor of Musketry 15 June 1866, Major on 4 June 1879, finally retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 Apr 1881.
