Description

The following extract is from De Ruvigny's Roll Of Honour 1914-1918:

"John Kenneth Rabone was born in Handsworth, Birmingham on 16 July 1884, the only son of Harry Joseph Rabone of Somerset Rd., Edgbaston, Birmingham and was the Director of Messrs. John Rabone & Sons Ltd., Hockley Abbey Works. Rabone joined the 5th Warwickshire Territorials as 2nd Lieutenant in May 1906, promoted to Lieutenant on 6 Sep 1909 and Captain on 15 July 1914, volunteering for Imperial Service on the outbreak of war the following month, serving with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from March 1915 and died in the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital, Le Touquet 1 Sep following, after an operation for appendicitis, contracted while on active service. Buried at Military Cemetery, Etaples. A brother officer wrote: 'He was loved by all ranks, and an ideal commander, and I cannot tell you how greatly he will be missed by C Coy., and all with whom he has been in contact out here.' And another: 'He will be greatly missed by men of the 5th; he was their best officer by yards and very popular with the men'. He married at Chingford Parish Church 21 Sep 1910 to Ella Gladys, daughter of George Henry Jackson of Sanderstead, and had two children: John Henry Michael nd Priscilla Margaret."
