Description

Thomas Prendergast was born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland on 29 Sep 1803 and obtained a commission as Ensign with the 89th Foot without purchase on 17 Oct 1820.

Promoted to Lieutenant on 22 Apr 1825, Prendergast was part of the Expedition to the Burman Empire, present at the taking of Prome on 1 Dec 1825 and the storming and taking of the enemy's trenches and works on 2 and 5 Dec 1825, and the attack, defeat and storming of the enemy's position on the bank of the Irrawaddy on 19 Jan 1826.

Prendergast then commanded the advance guard at the storming of the stockade at Malown and received the thanks of the immediate Commanding Officer, Brevet Major Henry Gore.

He was also present at Battle of Pagam-Mew and with the regiment on every occassion until the end of hostilities commanding a Division, originally No.5 Company during the latter part of the campaign. Transferring to the 45th Regiment on 15 May 1828, Predergast retired from service in 1840.
