Quartermaster Sergeant John McManus of the 4th Regiment, Madras Light Cavalry, passed his examination for Hindustanee, recorded in Allen's Indian Mail of 23 July 1868.

McManus and his wife had a baby daughter at Saugor, Central India on 17 Jan 1866. The Lawrence Military Asylums were a series of military-style boarding schools for the sons and daughters of British soldiers.
