George Reginald Evans was born in Battersea on 26 June 1888 and worked as an Errand Boy before joining the Royal Navy on the 19 Aug 1904, serving as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Glory from 9 Feb 1906, H.M.S. Mars from 31 Oct 1906, H.M.S. King Edward VII from 5 Mar 1907 as an Able Seaman, H.M.S. Excellent from 27 Mar 1909 and Roxburgh from 15 Mar 1910, before joining the crew of H.M.S. Hampshire on 6 Dec 1911.
Evans was awarded the Royal Naval Good Shooting Medal while serving aboard Hampshire in 1913, and was part of the crew of the famous ship until 18 Jan 1914. Evans was fortunate to transfer to the destroyer H.M.S. Gurkha on the outbreak of WWI, also serving on H.M.S. Nemesis from 20 Jan 1917 and lastly, H.M.S. Vancouver in 1918.
