Description

Military Medal Gazetted 23 Feb 1918, Sapper John Cadwallader, 171st Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.

John Cadwallader was born in Shropshire in 1883 and lived at Harp Bank Cottage, Burford, Tenbury.

He enlisted with the 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment on 2 Sep 1915 and entered France on 2 Sep 1915.

Transferring to the 171st Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers, Cadwallader was admitted to the 31st Ambulance Train on 31 Oct 1917 and had a leg amputated. He was discharged due to this disability on 17 July 1917.

The unit's War Diaires record that, on 28 Oct 1917, the 171st Tunnelling Company were in action at Messines Ridge with Lieut. A.S.G.Williams killed in action, Lieut. W.F.K. Hardman died of wounds and 8 other ranks wounded.
